Kuwait is classified as a high income economy by the World Bank and is designated as a major non-NATO ally of the United State. It is divided into six governorates - Al Ahmadi, Al Farwaniyah, Al Asimah, Al Jahra, Hawalli, Mubarak Al-Kabeer.
Kuwait has nine islands, among which Failaka Island is uninhabited. Bubiyan is the largest island in Kuwait and is connected to the rest of the country by a 2,380 m long bridge. behind the extravagant development, still lies the traditional values and warm Arabian hospitality.
The influence of Islamic and Arab culture on its architecture, music, attire, cuisine and lifestyle is prominent as well. The most distinctive characteristic of local Kuwaiti culture are dewaniyas, large reception rooms used for male social gatherings attended mostly by family members and close friends. While, unlike neighboring Saudi Arabia, the Islamic dress code is not compulsory.
Ramadhan is the most important festival celebrated in Kuwait. The entire nation observes a month long fasting. Hence, certain forms of public behavior need to be observed, such as eating, drinking, or chewing gum is prohibited during daylight hours.
